Ontario Supports Post-Secondary Institutions Impacted by COVID-19Published on March 19, 2021
St. Catharines - The Ontario government is providing $14.7 million to help Brock University and Niagara College address the financial impacts of COVID-19. This investment will support the sustainability of postsecondary education in the Niagara region and help ensure students get the skills and education they need for the in-demand jobs of today and tomorrow.
"This is welcome news for our local institutions of learning and will help ensure Brock University and Niagara College are able to continue the work of preparing young people for the fulfilling careers and jobs of today and tomorrow," said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West.
This funding is part of Ontario's total investment of $106.5 million for postsecondary institutions who have been the most financially impacted by COVID-19. Funding will help to offset pandemic related costs, including those associated with online learning, personal protective equipment and enhanced cleaning.
"Our postsecondary institutions are critical to the prosperity of our province and local communities and will contribute significantly to our economic recovery," said Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities.
"Postsecondary institutions are a key source of job creation, skills training, research, and innovation. That’s why our government has established the emergency fund to help address the financial impacts of COVID-19 and ensure they have the tools, technologies and resources they need to support students throughout their studies."
MPP Oosterhoff was joined online by Dr. Gervan Fearon, President of Brock University, and Sean Kennedy, President of Niagara College, to announce the new supports today.
"Thanks to this support from the Province of Ontario, Brock University is in a strong position to continue to deliver a world-class education, conduct groundbreaking research and fulfill our commitment of supporting Niagara's economic recovery and vitality," said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President of Brock University.
"This funding helps ensure the university is in a sustainable position to advance our academic mission and support job creation across the region. Our students, faculty and staff are very appreciative of this ongoing partnership with the province."
"We are very grateful to the province for the funding announced today, and for recognizing the significant financial challenges associated with COVID-19,” said Sean Kennedy, President of Niagara College.
"This important investment enhances our ability to support our students and our community and fulfill our important role in the economic recovery that lies ahead."
